Question 1: How do I get a Coxswain License?
Coxswain Certification requires that an Application be submitted along with the appropriate Fees before a required examination may be sat by the Applicant. The examination comprises an oral, written and practical component.
Question 2: How long does it take me to get a Coxswain Licence ?
Provided an application for a Coxswain Licence meets the requirements of the MAJ, it is possible for a Coxswain Licence to be issued within Five (5) days of receipt of the Application. Once the Application for Coxswain Licence is received along with the appropriate fee, the MAJ will advise the Applicant of when it will be conducting the Coxswain Examination. The Examination comprise three parts:
- Written – candidates sit a multiple choice examination covering simple questions
- Oral - candidates are examined on general knowledge of navigation
- Practical – candidates demonstration their ability to handle a vessel of the capacity and size for which the licence is sought.
Question 3: What is the validity of the Coxswain License
A Coxswain License is valid for Five (5) years. A re-examination is necessary for renewal.
Question 4: Coastwise Navigation?
A Coxswain License is restricted to a specific harbour (s) of operation. For coastwise navigation however, candidates must hold a BST Safety Certificate from the CMI (or its equivalent) in order to sit the requisite examination administered by the MAJ.
Question 5: What is Flag State?
“Vessels registration”, meaning the entry of a ship in the public records of State, is the process by which a ship takes on a national character.
Every “Flag State” maintains a register in which the particulars of merchant vessels possessing the nationality of that State are entered.
