In a worrying new development in the Somali piracy crisis there is evidence that Somali-based pirates are dispensing with their primitive schiff and mother vessel modus operandi in favour of using captured ships to step up their pirate activities.

Indeed, vessels in the Indian Ocean have been warned by the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) to steer 100 miles clear from the last recorded position of a hijacked car carrier, the Asian Glory, which is understood have been deployed by a pirate gang to intercept other ships in transit.

The 13,363 dwt UK-flagged Asian Glory [pictured in NYK livery] along with its compliment of 26 crew was seized late on New Year's Day 600 miles off the Somali coast and initially taken to the pirate stronghold of Hobyo.

The Zodiac Maritime Agencies 1994-built vessel is part of a fleet of 11 ships and about 200 seafarers held by pirates from the failed state.
