Ship
Registration
The
Jamaica Ship Registry (JSR) which was originally established in
1921 under the UK Merchant Shipping Act of 1834 has been modernized
by the Shipping Act 1998 and expanded to accommodate international
ship registration. Thus, non-Jamaican ship owners and shipping
entities can now register their ships under the Jamaican flag.
The
JSR is administered by the Maritime Authority of Jamaica (MAJ),
the entity established by the Government of Jamaica to develop
shipping and to ensure that the country’s maritime activities
are conducted in accordance with the local and international standards
of maritime safety and pollution prevention. See About MAJ for
more information.
The
"new" JSR offers the support of a quality Registry to a demanding
clientele operating in an internationally competitive and dynamic
industry. It therefore guarantees the most modern standards of
safety with competitive fiscal and other incentives to meet the
needs of the ship owner for lower operating costs and improved
profit margins.
